Website result of two passions: MSU and computers

Does Gene Swindoll's hobby border on the obsessive?

It does, according to the wife of a regular visitor to Swindoll's Unofficial Mississippi State Recruiting Page.

"She said to him, 'That guy must not have a life,' " Swindoll said, laughing.

Swindoll wants people to know that he does indeed have a life, a job and more hobbies than the Internet. But he also doesn't hide his feelings for his No. 1 hobby, the daily updating of his home page with news and notes about the athletes and coaches at Mississippi State and other schools.

Every story, every item, every tidbit of information Swindoll can find makes it onto his Website, which has been called up on somebody's computer screen 117,957 times since Oct. 2, 1996.

For example, the site not only contains information on all the teams playing in this weekend's NCAA Mideast Regional, but also reports that:

  • A Mississippi State football coach was seen in Natchez recently checking out prospects.
  • Recruiter's Handbook ranks State's men's basketball recruiting class sixth best in the nation.
  • A Mississippi State football coach was seen in Falkner recently checking out a prospect.
  • "I get people all the time who tell me how much they appreciate what I do," Swindoll said. "You don't know how rewarding it is to hear that. You don't know how good that makes me feel."

Swindoll, a 44-year-old accountant, lives in Caledonia with his wife of 4 years, Mary Ann, and their Yorkie, Hannah. The couple has no children. They eat out often and take in two or three movies a week, Swindoll said. They also are season ticket holders for Mississippi State football, men's basketball and baseball games.

A recruiting junkie from way back, Swindoll discovered the Internet two years ago. Last September he launched his own site, focusing on Bulldog football recruiting. It has mushroomed into a site that includes news on nearly every MSU sport, plus other Mississippi and Southeastern Conference schools. He updates his "Skuttlebutt" areas nightly and also provides a forum for fans to sound off in his Q and A section.

Swindoll gets his information from various sources, including newspapers, magazines, e-mails from other fans and his own trips to games. He estimates he spends 20-30 hours a week and $1,500 a year on his site.

Nearly nightly he sits down at his Packard Bell (133 megahertz, 14.4 modem) and types away.

"I used to watch TV and sleep a lot more than I do now," he said. "Now I couldn't tell you what (TV) shows are even on anymore."

Sometimes he works until midnight, then gets up at 5:40 a.m. to get ready for his "real" job.

He said he has toyed with the idea of accepting advertising, which would provide funds for him to subscribe to every newspaper in Mississippi and others from around the region.

But he says he wants to keep his site free to visitors.

"I don't need to charge," he said. "We make a good living, and I enjoy what I'm doing, and I make the time for it. It's a hobby; I'm not going to charge for my hobby."
