I looked Eli and Natham up in my best-ever index of MS Confederates (H. Grady Howell's "For Dixie Land, I'll Take My Stand"). Could not find Eli. Found Nathan as a member of Co. A (Balfour's 6th Battn.) and Co. A (46th MS).
Can't explain Nathan's supposed early enlistment, unless it was with a homeguard unit whose roster hasn't survived. Perhaps he fought with said unit at Shiloh and Iuka prior to joining the 6th?
Have you checked the 21st AL for Eli? Maybe he was in it with Nathan.
Check TN units, too.
