Objectives Web Page Editor Web Building Resources Workshop Evaluation

Welcome to the world of web page creation.

We will begin by opening Front Page Editor and selecting the template that you want to use.   We will take a brief look at the toolbar and menus.  As we do this, we will experiment with the various menus and dialogue boxes.

From there, we will decide on the font.  Fonts can only be “seen” by a browser that has that font on the hard drive.  For example:  the font CRAYON  can not be seen by all browsers because we do not all have this font loaded on our hard drives.  Keep this in mind if you ever decide to use an unusual or cute font.  http://www.microsoft.com/typography/web/fonts/fonts02.htm?fname=0&fsize=

Has a quick reference table for recommended fonts and the Microsoft programs they come with:  http://outreach.missouri.edu/webteam/fpt/3-fp.html

Examples of fonts can be found at:  http://www.moody.af.mil/og/69th/html/HTMLfont.htm

We are now ready to type in our information and create our links.

The following links will help you review how to create internal links and hyperlinks:

Internal links are links that will take you to a different part of the same document.

Hyperlinks will take you to other documents.  You can use them to create a way for others to email you. You can use them to link to other pages on the WWW.

Once we have added our content, we will add any graphics that we want to use.  Because we are using templates, we will not need to add a lot of graphics.  Once you have found the graphics you want to use on your web site, you can save them by right clicking if using a PC or holding the mouse button down if you are using a MAC and then choosing “save picture as” on the menu that pops up. I strongly suggest that you have a file on your computer where all of your images will be stored.  This will make it easy for you to find your images once you are ready to use them.

The following links will lead you to sites where you can select graphics: Some will have links to other graphics galleries.

Free Clipart Graphics Collections:  http://www.atwebsites.com/clipart/index.html

Free Graphics:  http://www.freegraphics.com

Free Clip Art:  http://www.free-clip-art.to/

These are just three examples of the many, many sites that have web site graphics.

Make sure to read any restrictions that are posted on the site where you get your graphics.  We want to obey all copyright laws.  We also want to respect the wishes of the person or persons who create the graphics.

As we work on our document, we will be saving our work.  All of your files will be saved on a disk or on your hard drive.  If you are posting your page on your ISP’s server using a personal account, you will need to contact them for information about setting up your site.  If this will be posted on a school website/server, you will need to contact your Technology Coordinator for information on posting your web site.
