Four Beasts (living things) of Revelation
four beasts
"... and in the midst of the throne, and round about the throne, were four
beasts full of eyes before and behind. And the first beast was like a lion, and the second beast like a calf, and the third beast had a face as a man, and the fourth beast was like a flying eagle. And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come."
(Revelation 4:6-8 KJV)
four
living
creatures
(Ezek 1:5-6)
"As for the
likeness of their faces, they four had the face of a man, and the face of a lion, on the right side: and they four had the face of an ox on the left side; they four also had the face of an eagle. Thus were their faces: and their wings were stretched upward; two wings of every one were joined one to another, and two covered their bodies."
(Ezek 1:10-11 KJV)
four cherubims (or four living creatures,
Ezek 10:20-22)
"And their whole body, and their backs, and their hands, and their wings, and the wheels, were full of eyes round about, even the
wheels that they four had ... And every one had four faces: the first face was the face of a cherub, and the second face was the face of a man, and the third the face of a lion, and the fourth the face of an eagle."
(Ezek 10:12, 14 KJV)
seraphims
"In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple. Above it stood the
seraphims: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly. And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory."
(Isa 6:2-3 KJV)
To help understand those four beasts I look to see what Moses
has given us about the tabernacle. God told Moses to pattern the tabernacle according to the
pattern showed to him in the mount
(Heb 8:5; Exo 25:8, 9, 40; Acts 7:44). As mentioned in
Exodus 25:17-19 and
37:6-9, Moses made for each
end of the mercy seat two cherubims. According to
Exodus 25:20 and
37:9 two of their wings outspread covered over
the mercy seat. In other detail, the wings of the cherubims Solomon made touched over the mercy
seat according to
1 Kings 6:27-28 and joined according to
2 Chronicles 3:12-13. In
Ezekiel 1:10-11 we find in heaven's reality the cherubims' wings do join.
Other tabernacle items patterned after the heavenly cherubims are molded into the bases for
the lavers.
"On the borders that were between the ledges were lions, oxen, and cherubims ... and every base had four brazen wheels."
(1 Kings 7:29-30)
